Reverse Dropshoot (often abbreviated as RDS by fancy flyers) is an advanced flying technique that involves performing Dropshoot using reversed controls (camera to the sky, running backwards). It creates a more powerful boost compared to the base version of it.

How to Reverse Dropshoot

Difficulty: Hard-SMALL-75x43

Dropshoot into Reverse Dropshoot

Introduction

Reverse Dropshoot (RDS) is one of the harder-to-learn methods, but it gives an incredible boost as you are basically running with a more stable and vertically angled camera than for a normal DS.

PC-SMALL-75x43 Unlike the Drophoot and many of its variations, the RDS is perfectly functionnal for mouse and keyboard players, due to not requiring flicking the camera left and right to maintain its angle. It is actually even easier/quicker to transition into RDS position due to the higher sensitivity from a mouse !

Getting into a reverse dive position works exactly like for a Reverse Dive Boost (RDB), with the only difference being what happens next (running on the sand for RDS instead of diving in the air). And just like RDB, the RDS can't be performed without first building up some boost energy and use it to transition into a reverse dive (more info on the RDB article).

Feel free to remap your controller's buttons, if using one, to have chirp and jump on a shoulder button (this technique requires a good handling of both sticks + holding jump and chirping to slow down). Or find another way to hold your controller somehow, as you don't have 3 or 4 thumbs ! (Note: avoid using RT/R2 button on PC as it had been reported to make the game crash)

Instructions

Different methods to get into a reverse dive position are listed on the RDB article already. You can have a look at them, but otherwise we will mostly focus on the most common one when it comes to RDS:

First method: Dropshoot into RDS

This method is very similar to the one explained on the RDB page. It is easier to practice it at first on flat surfaces, such as in lots of levels OOB (CS, BB, UG, Tower, Snow are all good choices).

  • Jump (possibly twice) and do at least one or two DS robe flaps.
  • Invert both camera and movement direction at the same time (release the jump button when lifting), to dive backwards (camera to the sky)
  • Hold fly when hitting the floor to RDS.

You can start pressing the chirp button when landing on the floor during the initial DS, in order to move only a little forward before making the transition to RDS, after the big chirp release.

You can also RDS in the same direction as you dropshoot towards (it is a little harder):

Second method: Dive into RDS

A good place to practice this is from any section of bridge in Broken Bridge. Speedrunners tend to use this method here as well, when diving from the first section of bridge at the very beginning, with a leveled camera during the dive. If you dive in a level boost position, make sure to have the camera aim enough towards the ground to still hear the wind blow in your ears, or you won't build any momentum and won't manage the transition to dive towards the camera after !

  • The first part of this trick is identical to the one described here in the RDB page before boosting (read it first).
  • When you are in RDB position, all you have to do is press and hold jump when landing on the floor, to RDS. You will see the camera make a bounce when hitting the ground. Often the part in RDB position is very short, as the goal here is to RDS on the floor.

Hints for RDS from player aravshetikolava:

*From a diving position*

  • "when transitioning to rds, try turning camera first and only then lifting the wayfarer
  • that way you will have a more seamless transition and will not lose your boost
  • look at yourself from the side, and then transition from looking from below with minimum left stick motion
  • try to make the camera do most of the work"[1]
  • Twitch clip, showing the transition

Note that you can also RDS towards the opposite direction you are diving to. This a similar move to the first method described above (DS into RDS) and is actually easier though less practical to use in-game oftentimes. Dive, then reverse the camera and the movement direction at the same time to dive backwards, and RDS like before.

When in RDS position

  • Make sure the camera gets below your head/body, because if it stays far you will have a poor boost. To force the camera below, a few big chirps can help a lot, otherwise make sure to run directly towards the camera and not sideways.
  • When RDSing on irregular surfaces (like the tower level on the sanded floor), doing big chirps repetidly can help force the wayfarer to the ground and stay in position.
  • The hard part with RDS is to guess where you are going as you can bump in every obstacles or fall from hills, therefore risking loosing the boost entirely. A good way to prevent this is to RDS in small circles:
    • To RDS in small circles, you can start by doing big chirps repetidly to both slow you down and force the camera below the wayfarer's body (just after releasing the chirp button, hold it down again). While doing so, or just after, start turning the camera to either side and you will run in circles.
    • After the camera is below the wayfarer's body, and in case you want to reduce the circle size even more, you can adjust your direction slightly with the left stick on a controller.

Reverse Dive Boost is an advanced flying technique that involves performing a Dive Boost with reversed controls, i.e. looking at the sky instead of the ground, and diving toward the camera.

How to Reverse Dive Boost

Dropshoot into Reverse Dive Boost

Difficulty: Hard-SMALL-75x43

Introduction

Diving in reverse is complicated, since you will need to have remaining boost power to initiate a reverse dive. Otherwise RDB works just like a regular Dive Boost.

If simply running off a ledge, with the wayfarer facing the camera pointed at the sky, you will not dive at all and just fall slowly instead. To force the dive in reverse, you have to first gain some boost energy with any "normal" Fancy Flying technique, and use it during the upcoming upward camera movement.

Instructions to initiate a reverse dive

There are a few common ways to charge "boost energy" and use it to transition into a reverse dive, mainly used for RDB itself or an upcoming Reverse Dropshoot (RDS).

First method: after a Dropshoot

  1. Start with a dropshoot ; preferably on a flat ground surface for RDS, or a perched platform for RDB (such as the top section of Broken Bridge with the shrine on it: see video clip above).
    • Possibly do big chirps to slow down during the DS if on a small surface.
  2. After 1-2 wing flaps (or more), you can fully invert both the camera angle and wayfarer movement at the same time.
    • This combined motion will make you boost very shortly (using a small portion of the boost power you had built up with the DS), and then dive in reverse.
  3. Release the jump button the moment you lift from the floor (to keep the scarf charge for after the transition).

Make sure you managed a correct camera orientation for a RDB transition, or you might hit the platform you were performing a Dropshoot on.

Second method: after a dive

  1. Dive for about 1-2 seconds, or as long as you want (Dive Boost, Level Boost, Slow Boost, Flap Boost or Infinite Boost position).
  2. Just like with the first method, push the camera to the sky and make the wayfarer move toward the camera around the same time, to get into a reverse dive.
    • On a controller you would just flick both sticks in their opposite directions.

This method is usually the way to go for reverse flyer boosting ! (see further tips and video tutorials)

Third method: after a boost

An other way to start a reverse dive would be to just change the wayfarer direction during a boost with camera already aimed up. However you would need to start the reverse dive before running out of boost.

This method could be used to recharge scarf mid-air by chirping at flyers high up ; for example the ones at the top of the tower level near the top mural...

When in RDB position

  1. Just jump about every second, or even hold the jump button down to avoid losing altitude too fast as you gather boost energy. Maintain the camera to the sky and a left stick fully toward yourself (heading toward the camera) when doing this ("S" key only on keyboard).
  2. If flyers are nearby, chirp them to stay in the air longer, recharge your scarf and gain lots of altitude later.
    • Flyers will make you glide during the dive as they make you glow, to increase the boost without wasting height.
  3. Boost when your scarf gets empty or close.
    • It's easier to boost facing the sky by just starting moving forward again, but you could also flip the camera angle around again instead.

Tutorial Videos

Common Mistakes

  • Not charging well enough before making the reverse dive transition and ending up falling slowly in the air in reverse, without diving.
  • Like for any other FF technique, make sure you are charging energy well in reverse by keeping the left stick from a controller fully along the vertical axis, and prefer turning with the camera.

Further Tips

  • Controller and "keyboard only" players: just before transitionning to a reverse dive with any method, you can push the camera fully left or right for about half a second, and then start flipping the camera + wayfarer around. Doing a loud chirp at this moment can help slowing down in case of a dropshoot, for better control and aiming. You will then start the reverse dive toward the direction you were initially headed to, or close.
    • PC-SMALL-75x43 When playing with a mouse, due to how fast the camera can move, the transition into a reverse dive gets easier/quicker to do and it requires or uses less boost energy as well !
  • The timing at which you choose to invert the camera angle and character movement can give slightly different results if not done at the same time exactly, and it can be worth finding what suits you best depending on the situation for a smooth transition (such as starting raising the camera a little before moving the left stick toward you).
  • Reverse Slow Boosting works just as fine as normal slow boosting, and you can use a light downward left stick pressure, in order to fall more slowly for better height after the boost !
  • Due to the nature of camera behavior in Journey, if you aim the camera up during a (reverse) dive, it is possible to have a steeper angle than with a regular dive (60° angle versus 52°).
    • This causes the wayfarer to lose altitude even quicker during a reverse dive boost (especially if not jumping regularly), but it also allows the wayfarer to gain a more powerful boost if diving for long enough ! About 26 seconds of total dive is required to reach the max RDB, RDS or RCB boost power value, versus 19 seconds for a Dive Boost or Slow Boost. Boosting power builds up as fast regardless of the camera angle when diving as a reminder.
    • Under normal circumstances, unless you had a lot of remaining boost power and scarf length when starting the reverse dive boost, you will never be able to reach the maximum boost value this technique can offer, without losing tons of altitude first. For this reason, RDB is only really useful when combined with Flyer Boosting ! (to complete the charge from a dive boost or slow boost)
      • By maintaining you in the air during the dive, flyers will allow you to charge for as long as you wish if there are enough of them (like in Tower level, UG Kelp room, or SC first rest stop).
      • Of course using RDB under other circumstances than this (for fun ^^) is perfectly valid ! Such as in BB to navigate between flyer groups and get bonus style points !

Trivia

  • For those who love to struggle, reverse Level Boost and reverse Flap Boost are perfectly possible to perform!
    • However the camera angle being more fragile in reverse, it will tend to quickly flatten if you stop giving inputs to the camera for a few seconds (reverse level boost) : on top of it being very hard to guess the camera angles correctly in reverse due to having very few visual cues, you will maybe have to flick the camera stick from a controller left and right to keep a camera angle constant ! (just like when dropshooting)
    • Reverse infinite boosting might be possible to perform while gaining height over time, but as far as known by this wiki, no fancy flyer tried hard enough yet to make it work.
      • The real downside from this technique would be requiring to initiate another reverse dive just before running out of boost everytime, and then struggling with the finicky leveled camera angles in reverse...
      • The only advantage from this technique would be that due to boosting with a camera facing the sky, the vertical boosting speed would get slightly higher than for a regular infinite boost, and therefore provide very slightly more height after every boost ! (this again is related to having a 60° camera angle versus 52° when the camera faces the ground)
