Slow boost

Slow Boost is a variation of the Dive Boost performed with less pressure on the left/movement stick, which makes a wayfarer dive more slowly. It is used to gain better height after the boost.

How to Slow Boost[]

Difficulty: Hard-SMALL-75x43 Takes hours of practice to be done consistently.

PC-SMALL-75x43 Can't be performed without a controller ! (stick sensitivity required)

Same technique as a Dive Boost, but don't push the left stick all the way forward during the dive.

Instructions[]

  1. Initiate a dive like usual (push the camera down, left stick fully forward)
  2. Lighten the left stick pressure (make sure you initiated the dive correctly before)
    1. When slow boosting, several left stick pressures can be applied. It takes a lot of practice to get the nice pressure correctly and quickly everytime:
      • The most optimal one in terms of slow speed (the one that will give the most height after boosting) is the minimal pressure that allows for the wayfarer to visually be in a diving position! The wayfarer's head should be slightly higher than their feet during the dive, or at about the same height with a little more pressure than required.
      • If you apply too little pressure the wayfarer will "dive" in a more vertical position (head way over their feet), and upon jumping you will flap your robe instead of twirling (Flap boosting pressure).
      • Diving slightly faster with a bit too much pressure isn't really a problem, you will just lose altitude faster and gain less height after boosting because of it.
    2. Optional checking for a good positioning of the wayfarer:
      • Your feet should waddle in the air up and down, one after the other under the body of the wayfarer (for a dive boost the legs are aligned with the body).
      • Using your ears and listening to the wind can help adjust: this will tell you if you initiated the dive correctly or not (no wind if not diving), and it can help you in hearing if you push the left stick too much (you should hear the wind only a little because of the slow speed).
      • When jumping, the wayfarer should lean a little more forward during the twirling animation and get back into position just after it by themself.
  3. When you find the correct position, don't move the left stick anymore (you can turn the camera left or right to aim as you want though).
  4. Start to jump in the air regularly, just like when dive boosting, rather than holding the jump button down (unless in a hurry to boost, which is perfectly fine).
  5. Boost camera up or facing the camera once your scarf is empty or almost.

Camera control[]

The camera can be pointed fully to the ground the whole time, but you can also level it more horizontally when diving to reach a further destination and/or gain better height after boosting ! (it is slightly harder)

Note because of the slow speed, the difference in altitude lost during the dive isn't huge between "camera fully to the ground" (dive boost) and "camera more flat" (level boost), but it still exists (especially if not jumping regularly).

To slow boost with a leveled camera angle:

  1. Start by pushing the camera down along with a left stick fully forward, and once the dive begins you can move the camera more horizontally, like for a level boost (but while going easy on the left stick at the same time).
  2. Just like when speed boosting again, choose a rather flat camera angle and progressively adjust it more down as the dive goes - possibly after every jump you do - to keep on charging energy for the boost.
    • This step is crucial when slow boosting with flatter camera angles, since you will be able to dive for long periods of time without touching the floor, due to the slow falling speed.
      • The flatter your camera angle is at the start of the dive the more early you will have to start adjusting the angle. Knowing when to adjust the angle and how much will come through practice over time.
    • It is possible you may have to press the left stick ever so slightly more forward as you adjust the camera angle down to keep on diving.
  3. Boost when done jumping

Tutorial Videos[]

Here is a slow boost tutorial in Broken Bridge (followed by an infinite boost demonstration in Paradise):

The following tutorial explains common mistakes regarding flap boost, slow boost and the Ainshent boost, and then talks about boost combinations.

  • 00:30 hint to slow or flap boosting (the two are often mixed in this video, and flap boost is often called slow boost in it)
  • Camera movements
  • 03:28 Jumping before the dive boost (better)
  • About combining boost techniques (leads sometimes to less boost, because Flap Boost has a low max boost power value)
  • 06:25 Flap boost and then "ainshent boost" gives amazing height

Common Mistakes[]

  • Not initiating the dive quickly by easing the left stick pressure too early when starting the dive !
  • Applying too little pressure on the left stick (flap boost pressure, with a flapping animation upon jumping): it can weaken your boost if the camera is leveled, or if you have been diving for a little while already, camera fully down.
  • Putting too much pressure on the left stick, and losing altitude faster than possible.
  • Getting too close to the ground before boosting can mess up the camera angle as usual, and can also prevent you from putting the camera fully to the sky, if boosting this way.
    • Just like for a dive boost, when getting close to a wall or the ground, make sure to stop on pressing the camera to the ground (if you do) or the camera will lift instead (keep it neutral).
  • Changing the left stick pressure too much during the dive. Try to find the correct pressure as early as you can during the dive and stick to it ! Do not: dive forward a little then release the left stick, dive a little again and release... This can really kill your boost.
  • Changing your camera angle mid-dive from fully to the ground to more leveled is a bad idea, since it will most likely reduce your boost a little ! You can perform a little boost instead, with a second slow boost after to reach your destination.

Further Tips[]

  • Use flyers just like when flyer boosting during a dive boost, to recharge your scarf, charge longer and increase the boost power even more without losing height !
    • If you chirp at flyers just before boosting, it will allow you to make a second slow boost once high in the air, for even more height.
    • The maximum boost value slow boosting can offer is reached after 19 seconds of dive (assuming great camera angle all along), which is usually not reached unless flyers help you recharge in the air and prevent you from losing too much altitude.
  • Slow boost is a nice technique to use in conjunction with goo boost, as it makes you arrive slowly in the goo and it prevents you from dipping in too much. You will recharge your scarf and keep the boost almost intact. This is sometimes used in Paradise level by speedrunners.
  • Slow boosting doesn't react the same in Paradise as in other levels:
    • it seems like the left stick pressure to apply is a bit different, and that different left stick pressures make a huge difference in the diving speed when slow boosting there.
    • It also feels like Paradise has less room for Flap Boosting on the left stick, which is replaced by more slow boosting pressure nuances. This boost is very powerful in Paradise.
  • Getting used to finding the minimal left stick pressure required for a slow boost is a very good training for Infinite Boosting ! (AKA slow boosting to perfection, without necessarily jumping at all !)
